Chapter 4

Eight o’clock, and night had descended on New York City in a gust of cold autumn wind. Darkness lay over the city like a blanket, pierced by a million lights: the glow of streetlights, the lit windows of offices and apartment buildings, the blinking lights of ships. Signs for restaurants, theaters, nightclubs and a thousand other institutions flashed and glowed. The night was full of sound as well: the rumble of traffic, the blare of car horns, the shouts and laughter of evening revelers, heading off to sample the city’s nocturnal delights. Music rang out, and curses, the sounds of secret violence in the city’s many dark corners. As usual, the city’s more savage side prowled restlessly beneath its surface of safety, hungry and never truly asleep. Eyes watched the flow of humanity, wakeful and waiting.

Three young, thin figures, wrapped in scarves and jackets, moved swiftly through the shadows of the nighttime city. Under their coats, knives, guns and other, more esoteric weapons waited, sewn and tied in so they did not clink or rattle. They approached a certain tall office building, disappearing down a side alley, to enter through a discreet door hidden around the corner.

Commander Fakhoury, pacing around the reception atrium like a nervous leopard, turned the moment the Damiano siblings entered. “Got everything you need?” Behind him, several Under Secs stood ready, guns prominent at their belts, chains of blessed metal gleaming around their wrists.

Sadie nodded. “Thank you for all your help, Commander Fakhoury.”

Fakhoury gave a grimacing sort of smile and led them back to the elevator bank. His Under Sec goons closed in behind them. Craning back, Max tried to use his telekinesis to lift their handguns and fling them across the lobby, just to see how they reacted.

Nothing happened: the weapons didn’t even twitch, nor the Under Secs break their stride. Max bit down a twinge of anxiety: what if he’d lost his awakened power almost as soon as he’d gained it? He hadn’t been able to move anything with his mind since flinging that bullet into the winged demon… With an effort, Max forced his worries away and hurried after his siblings.

Commander Fakhoury waited until everyone had boarded the elevator car before turning his key in a particular lock on the button bank. The doors closed, and the elevator descended, seeming to take a long time to reach the Under Market level. “Are there any floors below the Market?” Max surprised everyone, even himself, by asking.

Commander Fakhoury blinked at him, as though he was a tree that had suddenly started talking, but said amiably enough, “Of course not, son. There are plenty of storerooms and service hallways surrounding it, but nothing underneath.”

Max nodded as the elevator came to a halt and they spilled out into one of the very service corridors Commander Fakhoury had mentioned. The service areas of the Under Market had been stuffy and dull by day; by night they achieved a near-sinister character, with half the lights turned off, creating
